For thousands of years, mankind has been largely dependent on agriculture. At some point in time in our history, hunter-gatherer societies discovered that they could cultivate what they needed, rather than depending solely on nature to provide. By using their intellect, they could grow goods themselves, rather than be subject to the whims of Mother Nature.

These days, the science of agriculture has grown by leaps and bounds, yet the end result is the same: we are able to supply food to the entire planet through agriculture. Humanity’s mastery of agriculture has allowed the earth’s population to grow beyond what any would have thought possible thousands of years ago.
Although when most think of agriculture they think of massive farms with immense tractors and plows and thousands of cattle and other livestock, you must also consider “the little guy”. Across the planet, millions of folks are able to grow their own food – right in their own backyards!
Agriculture has been so refined that virtually anyone can do it. For many, all you need to do is go to your locally nursery or hardware store and look for the seed rack. There you can find dried-out seeds from virtually any common fruit or vegetable you can think of. Take it home, follow the directions, and voila! – you have grown your own food!
Want to grow your own food but lack the backyard to do so? No problem! The development of hydroponic technology has enabled those of us who prefer to live in the inner city but still want to give agriculture a try the chance to cultivate our own fruits and vegetables. Hydroponics, which uses a mineral nutrient solution rather than soil, allows you to grow plants in a much smaller area, such as an apartment or townhouse.
All in all, the development of agriculture has enabled us to live a lifestyle our ancestors would have never thought possible. Rather than having to grow our own crops and livestock, we can simply go to the grocery store. There we have our choice of fruits, vegetables, and meats from all over the planet. Most of us will never really know or appreciate what goes into getting those goods to the grocery store shelves, but rest assured that it is the science of agriculture that makes it all possible.
